“All the world loves a waterfall”    Donald Boyd 1932
Midge Hall at Falling foss years ago Turning dreams into reality

New life has finally been given to Midge Hall as Falling Foss Tea Garden and a new family home.

Having been derelict for almost 50 years, Jack and Steph Newman are delighted to have been able to complete the restoration work on Midge Hall and not only move in to the property but also re-open the much loved Tea Garden.

As most locals will tell you, Midge Hall is no ordinary dwelling. The fairy tale cottage nestles in the woodland at the top of magnificent Falling Foss waterfall, a unique location and a much loved beauty spot.

The property was originally built as a game keepers cottage in the late 1780’s and was subsequently opened as a tea garden in the early 1900’s. In the 1960’s the property was vacated by it’s occupiers and unfortunately was left to decay for a period of 50 years.

Jack & Steph purchased the property in spring 2008 and, after completing the renovation works on the property, re-opened the Tea Garden for business once again in July 2008.

So how did the fairy tale begin…. Midge Hall at Falling Foss
Steph originally from this area, remembers visiting the waterfall on a school trip and recalls even as a child thinking how magical the place was. Some 30 years later, whilst visiting family, Steph brought her husband and then two children to the forest on an outing. “As we all descended down the bank side towards the waterfall and Midge Hall came in to view for the first time a shiver went down my spine as I noticed the For Sale board nailed to the then completely derelict building. Without speaking a word Jack just looked at me and handed me his mobile phone, it was almost destiny, that even though we were at the time living in Wales with career and business commitments one day we would make this place ours.”

In fact, it took another 3 years and the birth of their third child to turn their dream in to reality. “We finally, moved in to Midge Hall on the 4th July 2008 and were delighted to be able to open for business at the start of the school holidays. Since then we’ve had an eventful, comical and challenging few years and we’ve certainly got lots more work to do but at this stage we have been touched by the support we’ve had from both locals and tourists alike.”
